How To Create Content in Three Simple Steps–Tips for Creatives–

Have you ever hit the wall when ideas simply do not flow, and the deadline is near? In the era of fast-paced content creation in which multiple platforms must be reached on a weekly or even daily basis, graphic designers not only are assigned to build digital art, but also must support the visuals with copy, creatives are consistently being challenged with writing captivating stories to tell. Now more than ever, in the digital world we live in, companies of all trades, and single individuals must be up to part with the times to reach out potential customers, and the competition is fierce. Luckily, guess what? Yes, we all have something to talk about, so let’s break content creation in three bite size pieces. In order to stay consistent, and to improve the flow of content creation, one must clearly: 1.- Define what is the outcome desired out of a post, 2.- Identify who it is you are reaching out to, and 3.- Have a purpose for the audience to engage. In short, what do you want?  from whom? what is in it for them?

The challenge is real…

Designing a strategy for content creation is key in today’s online ecommerce practices, as well as for individuals marketable presence. Nowadays there are even companies that offer the mastery of AI to produce quality of copy to keep that content coming at a fast pace, but knowing the abc’s of what a post must have and in what order is still the task of a human.

Defining the specifics of what the post is supposed to deliver keeps the conversation on topic, and helps the content creator narrow down the structure of the copy, it provides direction, for example, do we want to promote an item? Display new arrivals? Share testimonials? Gain followers? Ask for participation on a survey? Educate? Regardless of the objective defined; one thing to consider of value is the importance of keeping that conversation going, because the company or person will maintain a brand presence, will have an outlet to tell their story (the benefits the audience get), will build community, and ultimately increase the so much needed following or loyalty that translates into conversion, more transactions, in profits at the end of the day, now one thing is clear, in order to secure that loyalty, we must know who we are talking to.

Much is talked about the target audience as the ultimate group one wants to capture as a whole, but a better strategy is to break that group down to one and up to three personas, I personally stick to one, she even has a name (yes I’m talking to you Sarah Ferranti) it’s fictitious of course, but makes it easy to speak/write to one person, in other cases two or three personas from very different group ages and backgrounds might be needed, it all depends on the type of industry, it is a very different need a hospital has from that of a golf club. Once the personas are created, speaking at a personal level, and setting the tone of the “conversation” brings a more natural approach to the scene. One more element of importance is to always bring value to the table. Consequently, a clear purpose for the audience to engage must be established.

Self-promotion in a straightforward fashion is not always the best idea, and why? because it does not show a purpose for the audience to stay, it doesn’t bring up the “what’s in here for me”, so make it about them. The strategy here for the content creator is rather straightforward and proven to work, it goes as follows: make your audience aware of a need, agitate, then offer a solution. The most important part in this step is to share honesty, bring value, appeal to the audience’s intelligence, present the benefits they are getting, and always remember it is about them, capture attention at an emotional level, be real.

These three starting points will save time and will stop you as a creative from wandering around for hours or days trying to hit a home run, we all can certainly talk about anything and make it interesting, but breaking things down in small pieces within a structured manner, is gold for storytelling.  We all know that companies and our own online presence is not going anywhere, and the future will certainly bring more outlets and systems to engage and transact, this is a big reason to accelerate these processes and maximize time use, after all it is not one outlet but multiple, maybe too many to fulfill, but that’s the only way to stay relevant in today’s market environment.

Defining outcomes wanted, identifying a target, and having a purpose for the audience to stay tuned, are three easy tips to get the ball rolling, anyone can talk about anything and make it interesting, give it a shot, practice talking about a rock, it could be a funny story. After all, content is–for the most part–ALL about entertainment.

Happy writing, Cheers!

An enthusiastic young self on my apprenticeship to backpacking

So…What is the best part of failing? The answer is; you get to try again but differently, and that is the gem in this sentence –differently– and when we need to edit our first attempts is when creativity gets to practice.

I know we all have experience that moment when we want to pull our hair and yell at ourselves while thinking: How did I not see this coming? I believe that whether we accomplished our goals or not; my take on the matter is that our glory relies on our attempts. –I did try and I miserably failed, I get to dust off and walk again, I get to embrace the lesson because I will dare again– .

As a brief reference; on the picture above: I was on my way to do some climbing and some trail work up in Cathedral Peak (Tuolumne). As a novice backpacker I disrespectfully brought up about 50 lbs including the rope weight, and I say disrespectfully because my knees did not appreciate it, it was excruciating, I failed. Today I can do much more with 35 lbs of only the necessary items, lesson learned.

Next Question

I’m currently rewriting the future through graphic design

My next question: What exactly is the moment when it all failed?

In recent months I’ve been enduring some health chronic issues, and what a beautiful wake up call that has been, because the moment it all fails will be the moment I can’t move; I just happened to realize that I was doing it wrong, I’ve been doing it wrong by not prioritizing my wellness; instead I’ve been overworked to the marrow and I had to STOP. My past self completely failed in just about every subject, by not taking my heart desires serious and by merely functioning as a machine in this perfect slavery of our society’s current times.

So I’m diving full in and risking it all by attempting to do a real version of this soul while still around, the realization of our ephemeral nature has been always present in my conscience but never saw it this close to me. So graphic design it is, so the great outdoors it is. I get to be me. Unapologetically just me.

Studio

This is indeed the Arterra Studio. There is Typography, Photography, Social Media, Motion Graphics, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro, Drawing, Painting, InDesign, Public Speaking, Mass Media, Advertising, Lightroom and… boom… no room to shy away from myself.

I’m taking it all in, my way, so I kindly suggest you that, when in doubt…try any way, because when it all fails, nothing else matters, because that is our grave day, the only day we don’t get to try anymore.

Lastly, remember to only keep good company for a better ride in the park.

Cheers!

The Remote Life

Zoom, Instagram, FB, Linkedin, Twitter, TikTok…

It seems like it was going to happen regardless of the pandemic but indeed it has exponentially accelerated since 2020. Before we know it all of us will have a website and it will be an extension of us to be known outside our doors and into the “real” world.

—Lights, camera, Action!—

For many; school, work, shopping and entertainment happened behind the screens and indoors only, it seems like there is no going back one hundred percent the way things were before 2020. More and more jobs are now only remote and students have the option to remain remote, hybrid or in person.

For a while everything happened in this room for me, it was my gym, my school, my art studio, shopping center and conference room with friends and family.

I personally have had more presence on diverse platforms than with friends and family in the last six months than ever before and to be quite honest for me is a way to keep things balance in times when the great outdoors are not available for me. A couple of years ago I could’ve not imagine having the following platforms:

  • Instagram
  • Linkedin
  • YouTube Channel
  • FaceBook
  • Behance
  • Spark
  • Website
  • Blogger

This on the right are my great outdoors in recent months.

I was reflecting on things I really miss and that had changed me; I miss laugher, groups of friends laughing while grilling, cooking or dining around the table, I miss having visits and entertaining, I miss meeting up with friends at a restaurant and relaxing without feeling horrible for the servers that have to wear a mask (I do wear one all day at work and it’s nothing but exhausting) I miss the chatter at the gym and long hours of climbing… I know this is not therapy time but my approach to the remote life is that it will never substitute the human touch and I think is taking a toll on us; at the end of the day we will evolve by the next generation and simply we will not know what life was like before we got possessed! by screens.

Get outside!

Go away and as far were your phone doesn’t even work (just make sure you are 100% safe) and you’ll experience a re-birth. –Now, that’s my type of remote life–.

Cheers!
